About 45 Surfside
From a young age, Rebecca knew she wanted to become a chef. One of eight children, she would often prepare dinner for her family. “Sometimes the food was great and sometimes not so much,” Rebecca said lightheartedly. “but my father would always thank me for a delicious meal”.
Rebecca sought inspiration from Julia Child and spent most of her free time reading cookbooks and practicing new baking techniques. Rebecca started her career at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston as the garde manger and then moved onto The Ritz Carlton Hotel where she worked her way up to the assistant pastry chef.
In 1985, Rebecca opened her first bakery in a small shop on the south shore. After 10 years the bakery expanded to a larger location in Braintree Ma. Konditor Meister grew faster than she ever expected. Rebecca accomplished what she set out to do but found herself longing. “With such a large bakery and over 75 staff you’re not able to bake anymore. My responsibilities took on a different roll.” she exclaimed.
In 2015 Rebecca visited Nantucket with the hopes of purchasing a small shop for her to start another bakery. When she saw the listing for 45 Surfside Road it said 2 bedrooms and 5 baths to which she thought “Now, I’ve got to see this!” They pulled up to a large dilapidated building with broken glass windows and lot overgrown with weeds. She looked at the building and the number of cars driving by and knew this would be her next bakery.
Fast forward to 2020 and 45 Surfside Bakery and café is a bustling spot for year-round locals and seasonal tourists. Along with Rebecca’s freshly baked pastries and wedding cakes, 45 Surfside offers a breakfast, lunch and smoothie menu
